Here are photographs of my scratch-built pushing-unit
which is used for carrying Containers on European inland waterways. Drive unit and barge are completely self constructed, most of the containers are from Walthers, but they are somewhat weathered and the door fitting are addionally painted. The drive unit is built on a body of plywood. I worked mainly with Styren sheets, the range of thickness between 0,25 mm and 1,0 mm. The bollards and some other parts are made from brass. Some of the photos show the Layout and impressions of my harbour project from HAFEN HANNOVER - a domestic port which is located in Northern Germany at the quot;Mittellandkanal" - a waterway which is crossing Germany about 150 km south of Bremerhaven from west (River Rhine) to east (Berlin).

Category: R-T-R:
Intermodal Models that have details added or weathering applied to Factory RTR models:

FIRST PLACE: GARY HINSHAW

Description: Walthers 5-unit Thrall articulated well cars in factory painted TTX scheme, improved as follows:
* Lowered right height by filing bolsters and articulated joints down to
size.
* MT trucks/couplers, Fox Valley wheels: 33" on end units, 36" on inner
(articulated) trucks.
* Filed off spurious brake gear on units B, C & E, added brake lines on
remaining gear.
* Swapped end units A and B (by re-decaling the letters) so D unit brake
gear points towards correct end unit.
* Applied Gold Medal detail kit. Raised the end walks over the articulated joints so they clear the brake lines (as per prototype).
* Additional details: BLMA hand grabs on the end units, Gold Medal stirrups and hand holds over the articulated trucks.

Category: Kit-bashed:
Intermodal models that have been kit-bashed  from existing models;

FIRST PLACE: MICHAEL DEMPSEY

I would like to enter this model of an Australian Hino B Double container truck that I kit bashed from photos of the actual truck, found at the Port of Brisbane.
The prime mover was built from a bogey drive rigid truck, painted and decaled and then had the scratch built ‘bull bar’ and full air hoses added. The two container trailers were kit bashed from Deluxe Innovation skeleton trailers, to reflect the correct lengths of the B Doubles found in Australia. They were then painted and decaled and have had air hoses and tool boxes fitted. I wanted to keep this truck looking new, as most of the owner/operators in Australia keep them immaculately clean, so only light weathering was done on the truck. Submitted by: Michael Dempsey.

SECOND PLACE: JAN SMITH

This is a CP Rail Gunderson 53' stand-alone Husky Stack. Unit was made from Kato Maxi IV wells, chopped the articulated end off, and glued on the unarticulated end from another end-unit. Added a brake wheel from a photo etch kit by gold medal models and decals by Microscale and painted out and removed the BNSF markings. Jan Smith

THIRD PLACE: RICK HALL

Schenider Trailer: This is a Deluxe Inovations 53' trailer that has been shortened to 48', and have added air-brake lines. brake lights & some additional decals added to mud flaps & back doors. 53 foot trailers are just a little to modern for my time setting. Submitted by; Rick Hall

SECOND PLACE: MIKE McGRATTAN

The Canadian Pacific Railway and it's Express arm; The Canadian Pacific Express Company converted one car in 1965 (CP 4001) and then four others in about 1967 into COFC cars. They produced twenty containers and then expanded the series to ten cars by the end of the 1960's.
My model is based on a 80' American Limited core kit, slightly extended. I used home made styrene for the sides of the car and scale lumber for the deck; I used but three photo's for reference for the project. The "cans" are Bachmann and / or Model Power and painted and given home made decals. The car is virtually scratchbuilt, but the cans are only decorated by me.[Custom made decals]

 THIRD PLACE: MIKE DEMPSEY

I would like to enter this model of a Santa Fe Mobile Autorack Loading Ramp that I scratch built from photos taken by a friend, on a trip to America. The loading ramp was built from different sizes and shapes of Evergreen styrene channel, painted and then weathered lightly, to resemble the prototype photos.
